Implications of Unusual Weather (great, then wet)
Expect to see two types of first cutting dry hay - great stuff that was cut in May and overmature stuff cut in late June.
I am concerned that second cutting will be reduced becasue nitrogen fertilizer was washed out of the root zone.
I am also concern that the next cuttings will be reduced by the late harvest of some 1st cut fields plus the chance of little rain in late summer due to it having arrived already.
Here's Why: 2026 hay season started out normal - we got the fertilizer down that we could afford and the grass grew. First hay maker weather system was 1+ weeks early and lasted nearly 2 weeks - best I can remember. Lots of good hay was made by us and our fellow farmers (high protien & very dry). But then the rain showed up and kept coming - nearly 3 times the normal rain in June. This means the remaining (standing) hay is over-ripe (less nutritious & palletable), but the horrible thing is that it's not yet able to begin growing the next cutting.
